About the Nicola Valley Community Arts Council

The Nicola Valley Community Arts Council (NVCAC) has been supporting and creating artistic opportunities of many kinds for several decades in this community. Located in Merritt, BC, our programming and events take us across the Nicola Valley and its picturesque rolling hills, Connecting Community Through The Arts. Our mission is to exhibit, encourage, educate and inspire art in all media, to create an environment for artistic expression and cultural diversity, and to celebrate and support art makers. NVCAC operates the Nicola Valley Arts Centre, which is home to our local Community Arts Studio, the Nicola Valley Arts Gallery, and the Artisan Gift Shop.

 

About the Position

NVCAC is seeking an artistic innovator to join our team this summer as the Community Arts Coordinator. This position is well suited for a team player who enjoys developing out-of-the-box community art programs, can envision and initiate evoking art installations, thrives in leadership positions, and is passionate about connecting with the community through the arts. This position will facilitate our youth arts programs, support our community ARTreach (outreach) initiatives and activities, including activating local events with the mobile Art in Motion Trailer, and develop and install new community art projects.

 

Job Type: Full-time, Seasonal, Temporary

Contract Length: 16 weeks

Number of Hours: 30 hours per week

Wage: $20.00 an hour

Anticipated Start Date: June 1, 2026 or sooner

 

Responsibilities

The Community Arts Coordinator will be responsible for:

• Facilitating summer youth programs, including managing Crafty Kids Summer Camp activities. 
• Developing and organizing Crafty Kids Summer Camp, Community Art Studio Projects, and City Centre beautification art installations.
• Increasing community participation and awareness of new artistic mediums and of upcoming art installations.
• Increasing youth engagement by supporting community ARTreach with the Art in Motion Trailer on-location at various festivals and events.
• Fostering creativity and creating an engaging and safe environment for youth during programs, events, and festivals.
• Supporting youth with developing skills in new art mediums.
• Collaborating with team members to host community ARTreach events and festivals, including supporting artisans and activating public space to encourage artistic participation.
• Utilizing digital arts and administrative skills and tools for marketing, creative opportunities, and organizational development.

Tasks

Under the direction of the NVCAC Supervisor, the Community Arts Coordinator will be primarily tasked with:

• Organizing community art installations.
• Planning, preparing, tracking, and organizing daily art projects and example crafts for Crafty Kids Summer Camp. 
• Coordinating and leading arts and crafts activities for kids, ensuring a creative and engaging environment for the Crafty Kids Summer Camp and for the Art in Motion Trailer visits to local parks.
• Managing supplies and materials for youth arts programs, including filing and organizing inventory.
• Monitoring and evaluating participant engagement, providing feedback to improve future programs.
• Assisting with refreshing and upkeeping existing public art.
• Supporting set up and take down of community ARTreach events and festivals.
• Facilitating a youth art station during local events and festivals, such as the Nicola Valley Farmers’ Market, City of Merritt events, or the Lower Nicola Garlic Festival.
• Preparing and regularly stocking the Art in Motion Trailer with art supplies in advance of scheduled local events and festivals.
• Packing up the Art in Motion Trailer after events for the driver to return it to the storage site. 
• Supporting NVCAC with marketing of events, programs, and art shows
• Providing administrative support and development of administrative tools.

Team Engagement and Creative Opportunities 

• Communicate, report, and evaluate activities regularly with the NVCAC Supervisor through daily meetings. 
• NVCAC will provide support for skills development, position-related training, and access to learning materials.
• During the summer months, creative opportunities that arise will be shared with the Community Arts Coordinator. Summer youth are welcomed and encouraged to show their creativity during the Summer Program. 

About You - Skills, Qualifications, Requirements & Eligibility

NVCAC’s ideal candidate is someone who: 

• Is passionate about connecting to the community through the arts.
• Works well in a team environment and with minimal supervision.
• Is comfortable with community outreach with people from different backgrounds.
• Can confidently translate art for program participants and community volunteers. 
• Positively represents the NVCAC to the community as an Ambassador of the Arts.

Qualifications:

• Experience working with children and/or summer camps.
• Experience supporting community events.
• First Aid Certification, or willingness to obtain. 
• Experience with facilitating youth programs (preference).
• Experience with community outreach and working with vulnerable community members (preference).
• Class 5 Driver’s License - with own vehicle (preference).
• High school / post-secondary student or recent post-secondary graduate (preference for a candidate with training in Visual Arts, Education, Social Work, or Event Management).

Requirements:

• Must pass a Criminal Record Check
• Be willing to commit to the full duration of the Canada Summer Jobs work position
• Be able to work 30 hours per week
• Be able to work on weekends during events

To be eligible, candidates must:

• be between 15 and 30 years old at the start of their summer job
• be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the job and
• be legally entitled to work in Canada
