The Nicola Valley Community Arts Council (NVCAC) is seeking passionate and creative volunteer Guest Curators to help shape our vibrant exhibition schedule! If you have a keen eye for art, a knack for organization, and a desire to contribute to our thriving arts community in Merritt, BC, we want to hear from you.
We're looking for individuals or small groups to bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to our gallery spaces. While we have a foundational schedule, creative ideas are always welcome and encouraged for open slots and beyond!

January: Rediscovering Treasures Community Auction and Fundraiser
February: Seeking creative ideas! This is an open canvas for a unique exhibition.
March: Community Show – Seeking inspiring themes and ideas! Suggested: collaboration with Nicola Valley Museum and Archives
April: Feature Artist – Looking for proposals for a solo or small group showcase!
May: Feature Artist – Another opportunity for a captivating individual or small group exhibition!
June: Grads (Celebrating our local graduating artists)
July/August: Summer Artisan Show
What a Volunteer Curator is Typically Responsible For:
As a volunteer guest curator, you play a vital role in bringing exhibitions to life. Your responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Concept Development: Proposing a compelling theme, concept, or artist for your designated exhibition slot.
- Artist Outreach & Selection: Identifying and contacting artists whose work aligns with your curatorial vision. This may involve reviewing submissions, studio visits, or direct invitations.
- Artwork Coordination: Liaising with artists to arrange for the delivery and pick-up of artworks.
- Exhibition Design & Layout: Planning the physical arrangement of artworks within the gallery space to optimize viewing and enhance the narrative of the show. This includes considering flow, lighting, and visual impact.
- Labeling & Information: Preparing clear and informative labels for each artwork, including artist name, title, medium, and dimensions. You may also assist in writing a brief curatorial statement or exhibition text.
- Installation & De-installation Support: Working collaboratively with NVCAC staff and other volunteers during the hanging and takedown of the exhibition. This can involve handling art, using tools, and ensuring the safety of all pieces.
- Promotion (Optional but Appreciated): Assisting with promotional efforts, such as providing content for social media, press releases, or event listings.
- Opening Reception (If Applicable): Being present at the exhibition opening to answer questions, speak about the show, and engage with visitors and artists.
